Home' Work Boat World : October 2015 Contents The Mongla Port Authority, Bangladesh
has completed the acquisition of a
5.5-metre cutter suction dredger and four
additional craft along with other
accessories from India-based Timblo
Drydocks to maintain their port.
The vessels were ordered and delivered
in order to assist the port in increasing
the navigability of the channel so that is
has a permissible draught of 7.5 metres
up to the jetty. Ancillary craft have been
designed and constructed under the
classification of Bureau Veritas and
supplied to support the dredger during
her deployment in remote areas.
The cutter suction dredger is capable of
a production capacity of 450m3/hr at a
volumetric concentration of 20 per cent
for fine and medium sand. Designed by
the Asian Dredging Consultancy, it
comprises two side pontoons and a centre
pontoon, which are dismountable. The
size and weight of these modules permit
them to be transportable by road. The
dredger is suitable for heavy duty and
The engine room is located in the centre
pontoon, and the dredging operation is
controlled from a centralised operator
cabin. This dredger is built under the
classification of Bureau Veritas.
The vessel’s engine, driven by a 750kW
Yanmar engine of Model 6RY17 runs at
1500rpm. The hydraulic system consists of a
Yanmar engine driving two Denison Parker
hydraulic pumps. The cutter , winches and
spuds are hydraulically operated. The dredger
is equipped with a radioactive production
The cutter suction dredger is designed
to be connected to a 1.5km steel
discharge pipeline for pumping the
dredged material ashore. The pipeline has
been built by Timblo Drydocks as an
accessory to the dredger.
A tug with a bollard pull of 10.5
tonnes has been constructed and certified
for coastal operations. This tug will be
utilised to tow
accommodation craft and other floating
objects. The vessel is propelled by a fixed
propulsion system driven by two Yanmar
engines of 348kW each. A hydrographic
echo sounder is also installed.
A crane boat equipped with a crane of
capacity three tonnes at 10 metres and for
lifting the steel pipes components of the
discharge pipeline of cutter suction dredger
forms part of the ancillary package.
The vessel can also be deployed for other
applications such as lifting, shifting and
deploying navigation buoys at the port
whilst not on dredge duty. She is self-
propelled and driven by a Yanmar engine.
Officer and crew boat
To provide accommodation for officers
and crew involved in the dredging process,
