Home' Work Boat World : September 2016 Contents A Dutch naval architecture firm has
continued its success of finding buyers in
China with the launch of ‘Xunlong 7’, a
300-passenger fast ferry.
Designed by CoCo Yachts of the
Netherlands, the 42.3 -metre craft was built
by Plenty Ships of China, a subsidiary of
Sunbird Yachts, one of China’s only
domestic builders of luxury yachts.
Built to the Coastal Cruiser 300 design,
the aluminium catamaran has been
designed and built under CCS-2015 rules
and regulations, and is one of the most
econo mical high speed ferries in the Pearl
River Delta for its size and passenger
capacity. She has already been deployed to
run services in the Pearl River delta
between Shenzen, Zhuhai, Hong Kong and
Macau with her owner, the Xunlung
With only two 1,440kW MTU
16V2000M72 diesels installed, ‘Xunlong 7’
achieves a top speed of 33.2 knots at full
load. Two ZF 5000 gearboxes transfer power
to the MJP 750 CSU waterjets, necessary
pieces of equipment considering the
sometimes surprising obstructions that are
seen floating down the Pearl River. The 1.3 -
metre draught craft will operate at a full
load service speed of 28 knots.
CoCo Yachts has designed the model as
an enhanced version of their proven
Coastal Cruiser 199 model, of which five
vessels are in service. CoCo Yachts claim
that ‘Xunlong 7’ will offer her operator a
15 per cent fuel saving of similar speed and
capacity ferries in the region.
Plenty of stability is assured with the
10.3 -metre beam which also provides
plenty of room for passengers.
234 economy seats are located on the
main deck whilst 64 business class seats are
installed upstairs on the bridge deck. Also
located on the upper level is a VIP cabin as
well as a nine-seat sofa.
With the sheer number of fast ferries
threading the waters of the Pearl River
Delta, passenger comfort is taken as a
serious selling point. Noise and vibration
levels are low to very low with an average
72dB(a) being measured on the main deck
whilst at maximum power and full load.
66dB(a) was measured on the upper deck
whilst the wheelhouse and VIP rooms
measured only 60dB(a).
Continuing on the theme of passenger
comfort, a semi-ducted split system air-
conditioning system is installed to provide
cool air in summer and warm air in winter.
A pair of 90kW auxiliary engines from
Cummins provides the electrical power for
the environmental controls.
‘Xunlong 7’s’ sister ship ‘Xunlong 8’ was
launched in mid-July and will be ready for
sea trials mid-August.
