Spain’s Sener Group has been tasked
with the basic and detail engineering for
two double-hulled vessels for collecting
liquid oily waste from ships and solid waste
in compliance with MARPOL regulations.
The two work barges are for the
shipbuilder Tecnología Medio Ambiente
(TMA), and they are being built in Galicia’s
The larger barge has six tanks for storing
liquid waste, with a total capacity of 230m3
For solid waste, equipment for loading and
unloading six containers has been installed
on the cargo deck. This ship also boasts a
hydraulically operated telescopic crane for
moving the containers.
The smaller barge has two MARPOL
waste tanks with a capacity of 32.5m3
containers on deck for collecting solid
waste, and a hydraulic crane.
WORLD’S FIRST LNG-POWERED
HOPPER DREDGER LAUNCHED
The launch ceremony of DEME’s 3,500m3
LNG-powered trailing suction hopper
dredger (TSHD) ‘Minerva’ took place on
December 3 at Royal IHC’s shipyard in
Kinderdijk, the Netherlands.
The dual-fuel (diesel and LNG) dredger
has a ‘Green Passport’ and a ‘Clean Design’
notation, complying and exceeding with the
strictest international emission requirements.
The availability of the 83.5-metre vessel
has also been increased since it meets the
requirements for the extended dry-docking
system. Ships under this special programme
get a maximum dry-dock interval of 7.5 years
(instead of five years) by replacing certain
dry-dockings with in-water surveys.
The official name giving and christening
ceremony will take place in the spring of
2017 in Zeebrugge, Belgium.
ARDENT REMOVES STRICKEN JACK-UP
Ardent completed its biggest wreck
removal of the year at the end of November
2016. Weighing approximately 7,000
tonnes, the jack-up ‘Troll Solution’
experienced a debilitating accident while
carrying out maintenance work on the
wellhead platform CAAN-A in 2015.
The operation used Ardent’s newly
designed, underwater “guided guillotine”
to dismember the jack-up, instead of
cutting with more conventional methods.
“Traditional methods require either a
push or pull-cut with chains or diamond
wire. Pull-cuts require tunnels to be bored
into the seabed, whereas push-cuts require
a large framework to be built around,” said
Ardent naval architect Roland De Marco.
“The main hurdles to overcome were,
how to best cut the jack-up into sections
without fabricating an elaborate structure,
and boring holes underneath the jack-up
through the seabed was improbable due to
obstructions,” said Shelby Harris, Ardent
Americas operations director.
The Ardent salvage team cut the deck
house into six pieces with chain pullers,
and the vessel’s hull into 31 pieces with the
guided guillotine and subsequently lifted
these fro m the seabed with the ‘Conquest
MB-1’ crane barge.
HORIZON DELIVERS NINETEENTH TOWBOAT
TO FLORIDA MARINE TRANSPORTERS
US-based Horizon Shipbuilding has
delivered the ‘AB York’, a 37-metre
towboat, to its longtime custome r Florida
Marine Transporters (FMT). This is the
nineteenth vessel delivered to FMT
The ‘AB York’, designed by John Gilbert,
is four-decked and is outfitted for service in
areas restricted to overhead clearances and
draught limitations. She is powered by two
1,500kW 3512C Caterpillar engines,
provided by Louisiana Machinery, which
are coupled to Twin Disc MG5600
reduction gears with a 5.04:1 ratio.
Auxiliary power is supplied by two
175kW Caterpillar C9 generators. The ‘AB
York’ is an open-wheel vessel that holds
220m3 of fuel.
‘ALEXANDER SANNIKOV’ LAUNCHED
The icebreaker ‘Alexander Sannikov’ was
launched at sea during a formal ceremony at
Vyborg Shipyard on November 24. The
flagship Arc130 icebreaker, built to order for
Gazprom Neft, is designed to support tankers
transporting oil from the Novoportovskoye
field in the Gulf of Ob.
Work is currently ongoing on the
technical fit-out and finishing of the vessel.
Prior to its handover the vessel will undergo
mo oring and sea trials, with ice trials due
to be undertaken in the first half of 2018.
Two Icebreaker8 ice-class vessels are being
built at Vyborg for Gazprom, and are able
to operate at temperatures as low as
-50°C. The main purpose of the vessels will
be ice-breaker tanker support, assistance
in mooring and loading, rescue
operations, vessel towing, firefighting, and
The vessels will be used to ensure the
year-round operation of the Arctic Gates oil
export terminal, located in the western part
of the Gulf of Ob in the Yamalo-Nenets
Autonomous Okrug. The oil terminal, which
has a capacity of 8.5 million tonnes per year,
has been constructed to transport crude from
the Novoportovskoye field.
The vessel is 121.7 metres long, has
a beam of 26 metres (including fenders), and
a design draught of eight metres. The vessels
will have a diesel-electric propulsion system
powered by azimuth thrusters (two 7,500kW
thrusters at the back and one 6,500kW
thruster at the front). The vessels have been
designed on the principle of zero emissions:
all solid and liquid wastes will be retained
on board for recycling offshore. Both vessels
will be registered under the Russian flag.
The 21.5MW-capacity vessel is able
to operate in ice of up to two metres thick.
