Home-ported in Whalsay in the UK's
Shetland Islands, the vessel was designed
by Norway's Vik & Sandvik and built by
West Contractors for Serene Fishing, to
be operated by LHD Lerwick as part of
the Whalsay, Shetland Islands fleet.
The steel vessel measures 71.66 metres
in overall length on a beam of 15.6 metres
with a draught of nine metres and gross
tonnage of 2,751GRT.
'LK297 Serene' is powered by a single
MaK 12M32C main engine rated at
6,000kW, with power transferred via a Scana
Volda ACG 950 gearbox to drive a single,
four-bladed Scana Volda CP 105 propeller.
The vessel has single MaK 6M20C
and MaK 8M20C auxiliary engines with
CAT C4.4 and CAT C9 generators. The
vessel is also equipped with Brunvoll
FU-63-LTC-1750 thrusters, forward and aft,
a Hatlapa H/DT 160-45 steering system and
a Becker Marine 2400/243 F.2 rudder.
At sea trials, the vessel achieved a
maximum speed of 17.7 knots and a
cruising speed of 15 knots.
The vessel's winch systems, net
stacker and cranes were supplied by
Karmøy Winch while navigation and
communication instruments and systems
were supplied by Simrad, Sailor, Furuno,
Robertson and Iridium.
The current 'Serene' is reportedly now
the eighth vessel so named to have
operated within the Shetland fleet.
The DNV-classed vessel's hull was
reportedly built in Turkey and towed to
Norway for completion.
'LK297 Serene' is said to be the
first vessel in the UK pelagic fleet to
bring the catch onboard via the stern
rather than the side, thus improving
crew safety, while the vessel is also
designed to be one deck higher than
other pelagic trawlers.
