Home' Work Boat World : December 2009 Contents WORK BOAT WORLD December 2009 29
For many years China has had a very large workboat building
industry. Until recently, however, practically all of its output
was consumed domestically.
As the industry's primary objective was to produce practical,
inexpensive, "workhorses", the quality and finish of Chinese-built
workboats was generally regarded as inferior. Low wage rates meant
that maintenance costs were not a significant concern.
Over the last few years, though, Chinese work boat builders
have widened their horizons considerably. They are now exporting
substantial numbers of a wide variety of types of craft to many
parts of the world.
This export marketing carries with it a very much greater
demand for quality, style and finish. Despite the "agnorant" (a
mixture of ignorant and arrogant) comments of many doomsayers
in Europe and elsewhere, Chinese workboat builders are obviously
producing vessels of a standard that satisfies owners in many other
parts of the world.
The fact is that a number of well-established, and presumably
demanding, shipowners in a wide variety of countries, have
purchased Chinese-built tugs, OSVs, and other workboats. Most, we
understand, believe they have obtained value for money.
This latter fact is highlighted by the numbers of both repeat
orders and companies prepared to give Chinese built vessels a try.
So, while the Chinese domestic market is both large and rapidly
expanding, we still seem certain to see even more Chinese built
workboats operating in many other parts of the world. Obviously,
Chinese workboat builders are, like everyone else, subject to
economic cycles. Their foreseeable future looks quite rosy.
This survey provides readers with an overview of what modern
Chinese workboat builders are capable. We trust it also provides
them with some useful and profitable ideas.

Evergreen airbags for vessel upgrades and launches are an
advanced technology with bright prospects, superseding
traditional approaches. The advantages of the airbag system
include savings in time, labour, required force and expenses
while offering a flexible, safe and reliable service.
Launching vessels using the highly innovative Evergreen airbags
overcomes one of the most obvious limits facing small and
medium shipyards -- a fixed slipway -- offering an instant,
inexpensive alternative or a cost-free second slipway.
The operational process of the technology is very simple and
saves labour and time. There are no expenses for slipway
construction, lubricating oil is not needed and the airbags can be
re-used, making the system extremely economical. Further, as a
recyclable technology, the system is at the cutting edge of sound,
When launching large vessels, a vessel can easily be damaged
due to the non-flexibility of traditional slipways, especially at the
moment of launch. The danger of damage is entirely removed with
the Evergreen airbag launch solution.
The Evergreen system is labour-saving, time-saving, flexible,
economical and safe.
