Home' Work Boat World : January 2010 Contents 'Sea Dragon 4601' is an ultra high-speed patrol boat constructed
for the Taiwan Army by local builder Lung Teh Shipbuilding.
Built of high strength FRP, the vessel measures 13.9 metres in
length by 3.7 metres in breadth. To handle the high winds and sea
conditions common off the Taiwanese coast in winter, the hull
form features a high deadrise angle with six damping strips fitted
below the water line.
The vessel has excellent resistance performance characteristics
-- especially at high speed -- with the hull design verified before
construction by model tank testing at SSPA in Sweden. Running at
a maximum speed of 48.7 knots, the 'Sea Dragon' is driven by two
MAN D2876 LE423 diesel engines, each powering a Kamewa FF375
waterjet. At a cruising speed of 35 knots, the vessel obtains a range
of some 420 nautical miles from its 3,290 litres of fuel capacity.
The vessel is arranged for operation by a crew of three, with up
to seven passengers also able to be transported.
Delivered in March, Scheepswerf Grave yard number 155 was
named 'Amalyra' and was destined to operate along the
historic Rhine, Main and Danube, river system offering river
cruises for owner/operator US-based Amadeus Waterways.
As with the vessel's sister vessel delivered over recent years, the
vessel design maximises the 148 passengers' exposure to the
passing scenery via large, full-length windows and extensive
Registered in Basel, Switzerland, the steel-hulled vessel has an
overall length of 110 metres on a beam of 11.5 metres, with a
depth of 2.75 metres and a draught of 1.6 metres.
'Amalyra' is powered by twin Caterpillar C32 main engines,
each rated at 748kW at 1,800rpm, driving Veth VZ 1800 CR
Rudderpropellers, delivering a cruise speed of 10 knots. The
rudderpropellers, when combined with a separate Veth-Jet 3K-1200
thruster in the bow, provide the vessel with the exceptional manoeuvrability it requires to navigate the often narrow and
crowded waterways of Europe.
The 83.5-metre-long combined purse
seiner / pelagic freezer trawler 'Nordborg'

Chile on its maiden voyage home to
Klaksvik on the Faroe Islands.
The vessel is of Rolls-Royce design
type NVC-355 and is one of the most
sophisticated fishing vessels delivered
The vessel is designed for onboard
production of herring fillet with a capacity
of more than 200 tonnes a day. This
83.5-metre-long vessel will be able to carry
1,200m³ in refrigerated seawater and
another 2,400m³ in freezing storage. Once
the fish are filleted and packed ready for
delivery, all residue is used for on-board
production of fish oil and fish meal. The
fish oil tank capacity is 160m³ while the
fish meal storage capacity is 1,000m³.
The vessel is powered by a single
Rolls-Royce Bergen B32:40 V12P main
engine, rated 6,000kW at 750rpm or
4,200kW at 650rpm driving a Rolls-Royce
Kamewa Ulstein controllable pitch propeller
in fixed nozzle via AGSC 3000 gearboxes
giving a speed of 15 knots.
Rolls-Royce Marine also delivered the
auxiliary engines, winches, automation
system, thrusters, rudder and steering gear
for the vessel, forming an integrated design
and equipment delivery.

The vessel has a deep-V hull and reinforced D-shaped rubber
tube to absorb its reported "100 controlled collisions per day",
with a closed main deck and wheelhouse offering
warm transport. It has an overall length of 10.5 metres on a
3.94-metre beam (including the tubes) and a draught of 0.75
metres, fully loaded.
The single John Deere PowerTech 6125SFM75 main engine is
rated at 455kW at 2,100rpm, with power transferred through a ZF
350 1,225:1 reduction gear to drive a Rolls-Royce Kamewa FF410
waterjet with dual interceptors. A single Keypower KP10 thruster,
rated at 11kW at 1,500rpm, adds manoeuvrability.
