Dutch shipbuilder De Haas Maassluis
specialises in the construction and repair
of steel and aluminium work boats and
luxury yachts of up to 65 metres in length.
Located in Maassluis, only a short
sailing distance from the major port of
Rotterdam, the yard has been in existence
for over a century and has a wealth of
experience to draw on in addition to its
modern shipbuilding facilities.
The company is currently midway
through completion of a major project for
the Dutch Ministry of Public Works
(Rijkswaterstaat). The project involves the
construction of a ten-vessel series of patrol
boats for service in The Netherlands'
extensive system of inland waterways.
Designated the 'RWS 70 Series', the patrol
boats were designed from the outset with
the core task of handling waterway traffic
control and vessel inspection, with the
subsidiary tasks of general emergency
assistance and surveillance.
The first vessel in the series was
delivered late in 2008 and the last vessel is
scheduled for delivery sometime in 2011.
The design for the 'RWS 70 Series' was
carried out by Rotterdam based naval
architects Studio Yacht and, unusually for a
small patrol boat design, they opted for a
steel construction hull. In order for this
relatively heavy hull material to result in a
fast and manoeuvrable vessel, special
attention was paid to the hull form and
appendages to ensure efficient and easily
driven lines. Additionally, an ultra-light
interior was specified to compensate for the
increased weight of the hull.
The result is a vessel that easily reaches
her maximum speed of over 24 knots
powered by only a pair of 651kW
Caterpillar main engines, while retaining
the traditional strength and longevity
benefits of a steel hull.
With an overall length of 23.95 metres, a
beam of 5.59 metres and a designed draught
of 1.32 metres, the design has a loaded
displacement of some 60 tonnes. The
semi-planing hull is topped by a
flexi-mounted aluminium construction
wheelhouse that accommodates the
two-person crew plus up to eight passengers.
The dual command station is located
forward immediately behind reverse raked
windows and outfitted with an electronics
package supplied by Bakker Sliedrecht.
While the vessels are not intended for
multi-day patrols and thus feature only
minimal sleeping arrangements, a compact
galley and WC are located within the hull
for the crew's use.
On deck, the design features a Muir
vertical electric anchor windlass on the bow
while aft is located a Heila knuckle-boom
crane used for launching and retrieving the
Avon Searider rescue boat. Handrails
surround the deck on all sides with
openings provided in the bow and sides for
Below the waterline the design is
propelled by a pair of Voith Turbo
composite propellers, each turned by the
aforementioned Caterpillar main engines
via ZF gearboxes. A 20kW Voith side
thruster is installed in the bow to provide
additional manoeuvrability. At a patrol
speed of 11 knots the vessels have a range
of around 1,100 nautical miles.
