Constructors was recently commissioned
to supply and install towing winches,
windlasses and capstans to three 32-metre
tugs in Dampier, Western Australia.
The Shipco winches ordered had the
following main features:
• Brake Capacity: 200 tonnes, fourth layer
• Drum diameter: 800mm
• Low speed bare drum: 26.25m/minute,
19.48 tonnes line pull
• Low speed fourth layer: 46.9m/minute,
10.9 tonnes line pull
• High speed bare drum: 72.1m/minute,
6.37 tonnes line pull
• High speed fourth layer: 129m/minute,
3.96 tonnes line pull
The ordered capstans were rated at
five tonnes pull on a 550mm-diameter

All three of the tugs were successfully
retrofitted and passed all necessary
inspections. The installation of
equipment on the third tug, ‘Neptune’,
took place from November 5, 2009 to
November 15, 2009, from the arrival of
the Shipco team in Western Australia to
their departure for New Zealand.

Advances in DECK MACHINERY
Towing winches, research winches, and winches for other
special purposes, developed and built in exact accordance with
customer requirements, have always been the heart of the
Hatlapa product offer. Hatlapa offers either either low-pressure
hydraulic, high-pressure hydraulic or electrical drives,
depending on customer requirements.
A productive step for Hatlapa has been a joining of forces with
renowned US-based offshore service company Oil States Skagit
SMATCO. The two companies have combined their capacities to
produce large towing winches with up to 6,000kN line pull. In
doing so, Hatlapa returns to its “roots” in the offshore service
market of the early ‘80s when many of the North Sea offshore
vessels were designed and built in Germany with Hatlapa
supplying the requisite towing and anchor-handling winches.
This know-how – especially with regard to the high-power,
low-pressure Hatlapa hydraulic motor – was taken into
consideration when Oil States was looking for a partner in
producing offshore winches. The current range offers winches with
line pulls of 100, 225, 300 and 400 tonnes (double-drum, waterfall
design) and 325, 450, 500 and 600 tonnes (triple-drum).
Combined, the companies have more than 140 years of
know-how and expertise in Europe and abroad, in the North Sea
and the Gulf. The unique combination of SMATCO strength and
Hatlapa power is a very strong alliance in terms of innovation,
capacity, experience and expertise, the result being more than the
sum of its parts.
In addition Hatlapa delivers a range of AC-driven AHT winches,
the Hatlapa-Stepless drive, including inner-friction clutch
technology for safe under-load release, and the Hatlapa-Slipsafe.
Currently, double-drum winches with line pulls of 100, 200 and
300 tonnes are working in the field.
