The new 20.4-metre long by 4.08-metre
beam 'Suisei' was delivered at the end of
March to Iwakuni-Hashirajima Kaiun -- a
ferry company operating services between
Iwakuni Port, Kuro Island, Hashi Island and
Hashitra Island on Japan's Inland Sea.
The new vessel replaces a previous ferry of
the same name that was slightly bigger and
of a higher capacity than the new 'Suisei'.
The new vessel will deliver greatly increased
economic performance for the owner and
significant consideration was given during
the design and build process into making the
ferry as efficient as possible.
The slender single hull features a
bulbous bow for improved seakeeping and
decreased water resistance while above the
waterline the single deck was streamlined
to minimise air resistance. The result is a
vessel that delivers impressive fuel
economy at its cruising speed of 24 knots
and can reach a maximum speed of 34
knots at 80 percent load.
Twin 540kW Yanmar 6KXZS-GT diesel
engines provide the vessel's propulsive
thrust, each turning a three-bladed
fixed-pitch propeller. Auxiliary power is
provided by a single Caterpillar C2.2
gen-set outputting 21kW at 1,800rpm.
Able to transport up to 70 passengers, the
fully air-conditioned accommodation area is
split between a seating area forward and a
lounge area in the stern. Between the two is
located a WC and an area for wheelchair
passengers in keeping with Japanese
requirements for the safe and convenient
transportation of disabled and elderly
passengers. Passenger embarkation is carried
out via a hydraulic ramp and large side doors.
Operated by a crew of three, 'Suisei's'
wheelhouse is raised above the forward
passenger area to provide excellent
visibility for the master. A Furuno
electronics package is fitted that includes a
radar and GPS.
Kiso Shipbuilding has a long history in
the design and construction of fast
passenger ferries and their expertise has
won them a loyal following among Japan's
many ferry operators. This is the third
'Suisei' they have delivered and follows a
pattern of repeat business from satisfied
customers. Specialising in aluminium
manufacturing, the company also builds
patrols vessels, rescue boats, fire boats and
other high-speed craft.
